Debate Topic

As the knowledge about art as an investment is increasing day by day more and more people are buying art because of its investment value rather than aesthetic value.A recent trend has been of buying art through online art galleries or auction houses. Many of the galleries have started converting their galleries into e-commerce.
As a gallery lover would you prefer buying art online??

Well the online medium is easy. if i know the artist i can buy paintings without any problem sitting in my on home. the painting is then sent to me and no time is lost.

for me the online medium acts as a reference point. It helps me understand what is going on in other cities and helps me decide which artists are doing well and which are not. It also makes life easy- to just go to gallery websites rather than going to each gallery. That is time and effort. although i must say that going to galleries has its own charm and looking at great works first hand is always better than just looking at an image of the same.

the internet model has become successful only because of its reach. I am in mumbai so can see all the galleries but what about the ones who live in small towns and would like to buy art. I have a friend who lives in a small town in kerala and has bought from this site because it was easy to use. Also i feel that sometimes one makes the effort of going to a gallery and they dont have nothing to show you. and talk about buying something you dont want. At least this way i know what i want and if i like something buy it

No i never buy art online. I would like to buy paintings only after seeing the physical work. but it helps me to decide what i would like to see when i am there.

I dont mind buying art online although i would like to see the paintings before i buy it, it dosnt make a big difference. I buy art all the time from this site saffron, sothebys as well as christies. I have never had a problem. The most important thing is that the information given should be correct.
Secondly when i buy from sothebys and christies I buy on the telephone and the only thing i have for reference is an image of the work in the catalogue. os more or less it works to the same thing as buying online.

I agree, there is no problem in buying online. saffron contributes to 10% of the indian art market and is the biggest player. and lets not forget it is only online. So i think there is a big demand for online art galleries.

Although i have heard a few negative things about the online auction house, what is mentioned here is true.

this site is great but for more localised.
I like this site.
I think they are doing a great job to take the art market ahead
