what is it in a painting that makes an art critic rave about it, or make them declare it as a bad work of art??? I dont think its skill, although that helps but its originality, surprise, experimentation, visionary, and to accept ones self in public. Its an statement that one makes and the way they show what they art trying to say. If someone is not saying anything then it is like a good writer with nothing to write. It is like a school teacher who is teaching the same thing and may be very good at what she is doing but shall never become great. An art critic is seeking to find that one star that stands aside with from the rest. Someone who can make you think. Someone who is smart and then innovates new thoughts again and again. now thats someone to look out for. but it just isnt someone who has done it once but someone who can do it again and again. some artists just get into a methord of making the same image over and over again. and you have art critics talking very highly of these artists. that is a lot of crap. The guy might have got something right once and that makes him a good artist but it dosnt mean he is great. an artist must work and explore new ideas to really test his own artistic skills and only then could he become a great artist and a great person. As a critic one looks for many and all aspects.If it is an artlover one would just go for an art work that is easthetically appealing or just some thing liked without being crtical about it.
