Profile of Amitaba Banerjee

Amitaba Banerjee`s forte is the forceful, econimical and apt use of line. The works come to life by the synergy of his use of the line. This rightly makes him a master of the graphic print making medium. His love affair with the medium began when he participated in a workshop conducted by American graphic artist, Paul Lingren of the Smithsonian Institute in New Delhi, while still a student at the Government School of Arts in 1970.

Born in 1928 in Bangladesh, Amitaba Banerjee studied at the Government School of Arts, Kolkata. His important exhibitions include Third British International Biennale (1972), Western-Pacific Print Biennale, Australia (1976). Intergrafik, Germany in (1978 & 1984), Seven Contemporary Artists, Birla Academy of Art and Culture. Kolkata (1982), Indian Prints, Amsterdam (1984), Print-making in India. Festival of India, USA (1985), exhibition at Waterloo University, Canada (1985) and Lalit Kala Akademi exhibition, Delhi (1985 & 1986).
