Artist Profile
M.F. Hussain - “Mostly people are ignorant, what is the language of painting. but time will teach them.”
F.N. Souza invited him to join the Progressive artists’ group in the year 1948. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that contemporary painting and Maqbool Fida hussain are one and the same. Hussain is the only painter to have actually internationally popularized art and the Indian art scene like no other. Earlier he used to make billboards for feature films, make toys and create furniture designs to earn money. However when he took to painting he always made sure to return to his roots and pull out inferences that was a mélange of the folk, tribal, mythological art to create vibrantly contemporary, living art forms.

He depicts the icons of Indian culture, through the ages, seeking to capture the quintessence of his subjects, like Mother Teresa and the characters of epics like the Mahabharata. Besides paintings, he has also made films like “Through the eyes of a painter” in th eyar 1967 that won the prestigious Glden Bear award at the Berlin Film Festival and “Gaja Gamini” in the year 2000 The government of India honoured him with the Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan awards, both prestigious civilian awards. Husain passed away in London in 2011. Husain passed away in London in 2011.
