Sonia is a perfectionist whose works are very well-executed
Born and brought up in Kolkata, the family’s move to Delhi saw Sonia joining the College of Art in 1998.

Six years and an MFA degree later, the accolades kept coming for this Delhi University (MFA) gold medallist: the National Award for Painting and Ravi Jain Memorial Fellowship Award are but two examples. Inspired by Indian masters like Souza, Tyeb Mehta and Rameshwar Broota, this 31-year-old is “very focussed”, says art curator and consultant Sushma K. Bahl. “Sonia is a perfectionist whose works are very well-executed,” adds Bahl.

She has worked extensively in Etching and Lithography first under eminent Indian printmaker Anupam Sud and then in Atelier 2221, Print and Edition studio. Sonia is a Gold Medalist for MFA from College of Art and University of Delhi (2004). She then became one of the youngest recipients of the National Award in Painting from the Lalit Kala Akademi, Gov. of India, Ministry of Culture in 2005. Some of her artist in residence/studio based programs include 'Identity and Masquerade', studio-based practice at Tate Modern, London in 2005, 'Khirkee Ki Khoj', six months studio based project at Khoj International Artists Organization 2005-2006, and a year long residency and studio-based practice at Atelier 2221, Printmaking and Edition Studio.

“Her works are different in that her concerns are relevant but not hyper political or hyper emotional. Her imagery and execution stand out even in a larger body of art.” Sonia says her experience as coordinator arts at the India Habitat Centre and the studio-based project at the Tate Modern in London in 2006-2007 “have been instrumental in shaping my art practice”.

She has exhibited in several group shows since, with a body of great work
